Linenplace is one of the web's top destinations for
bedding thanks in part to a rating system for sheets based on ratings for: soft, crisp, luster, weight and price. Each sheet set receives a rating from 1 to 5 for each of these criteria. Softness is probably the most sought after quality in sheets. Softness mostly relates to fiber content and weaves. Generally high quality cottons (like Egyptian), silk, and bamboo and micro modal (both of these are types of rayon) are the softest. Many customers prefer Egyptian cotton sheets for their well-known softness. Also, sateen weaves tend to be softer than percales because of the arrangement of the threads in the warp and weft of the weave construction. Some customers love a crisp feeling; you will find this with percale weaves (also called plain weave).
Percale sheets have an old fashioned feel to them and tend to feel cooler than sateen. For luster, the ultimate would be silk Charmeuse! However cotton sheets can also be lustrous. Sateen weaves made with fine yarns and excellent finishing can also be quite lustrous. The luster tends to diminish with washing (this is because washing and drying acts to puff up the miniscule fibers that are part of each yarn in the weave); but luster can be restored by ironing. Weight mostly relates to thread count and yarn size. When you put more threads per square inch you expect more weight, and this is generally true. However, higher thread count sheets made with very high yarn size can feel much lighter than expected due to super fine yarns being used in the weave. (Note: Yarn size refers to the thickness of the yarns. the higher the yarn size, the finer the yarn. for example 60s yarns are thicker than 100s yarns.) Price is a very practical metric when it comes to sheets and most people have an idea of what they feel is reasonable to spend. Linenplace's price ratings make it easy to find sheets in your price range. Among other important considerations is fitted sheet pocket depth. Many bed mattresses today are quite deep and require
deep pocket sheets. Nearly all of Linenplace's offerings fit today's deep mattresses, we also offer some super deep pockets that accommodate mattresses up to 21" deep!
