Expert Ratings

Several years ago, consumers started hearing a lot about thread count. Companies were marketing sheets much like they do horsepower - the higher the number, the better. Right? Well, like horsepower and cars, thread count and sheets is a lot more complicated than just a number.

Factors like weave and construction, fiber, yarn size, staple length, finishing, etc. all greatly impact the look, feel and most definitely the price of a sheet - but they don't mean much to anyone who doesn't spend an unhealthy amount of time with linens. For most people, it's enough to feel the fabric in person and go from there. Of course, when it comes to buying bed linens online, it helps to have more information to ensure you're getting a quality product for the right price.

At Linenplace, we've decided to not only provide you with as much detailed information about each sheet as we can, but to go a step further and create a comprehensive 5-point system by which to rate each product. We've chosen the 5 most important criteria based not on technical industry jargon that takes considerable research to understand, but on the factors most useful to shoppers: softness, crispness, luster, weight and price.

You can click on the ratings graph to display a comparison page that lists each sheet set with its corresponding scores. Click on an individual criteria and display in cascading order the sheets with the highest to lowest rating. Keep in mind that a "1" or "2" rating on "weight" means that the sheet is lighter - a fabric characteristic preferred by most people. Also, "crisp" and "soft" are not necessarily exclusive - a sheet can have both a high crisp and high soft rating. "Luster" is the amount of sheen or shine a sheet has, which is largely dependent on the weave and finishing. All of our ratings are relative to our other products, so if you see a soft rating of "2" don't be frightened, that doesn't mean the product isn't soft, it means that relative to our other products it gets a lesser mark for softness.
